Heavy Rain: Minister Geetha Jeevan Reviews Precautionary Measures in Thoothukudi District
Thoothukudi:
Due to the continuous heavy rainfall in Thoothukudi district, Minister for Social Welfare and Women’s Rights Smt. Geetha Jeevan held a review meeting under the chairmanship of District Collector Mr. K. Ilambagavath, I.A.S. The meeting was attended by officials from the Corporation, Electricity Board, Revenue Department, and other key departments.
After the meeting, addressing the press, Minister Geetha Jeevan said:
“In view of the ongoing heavy rains, precautionary measures have been taken across all municipal, town panchayat, and village panchayat areas to safeguard the public from monsoon-related damages. All department officials have been instructed to remain on duty round the clock.”
She further stated that responsibilities have been assigned to key departments such as the Electricity Board, Highways, and Health Department to ensure immediate response to any emergency situation.
Sandbags, JCB machines, and motor pumps have been arranged in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging to prevent flooding and drain stagnant water promptly.
The Revenue Department has been directed to monitor the water levels in tanks and reservoirs to ensure safe discharge without breaches. In Thoothukudi Corporation limits, 38 motor rooms and 58 water pumps have been deployed to tackle water stagnation effectively.
The district administration, she said, is fully prepared to face any heavy rainfall scenario through coordinated efforts from all departments.
Arrangements have also been made to provide temporary shelters for people, if required. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team is on standby and ready to assist the district administration in relief operations.
