Cybercrime Alert: Police Warn Public About Rising WhatsApp Hacking Scams

THOOTHUKUDILEAKS

Thoothukudi:

District Police have issued a public warning regarding the increasing number of WhatsApp hacking scams being reported across the region.

Cybercriminals are now using fake WhatsApp groups posing as banks, government departments, and other trusted institutions with names like “Aadhaar Updates,” “Traffic e-Challan Payment,” and “Rewards & Cashback Offers.”

They send fraudulent APK files or links that, once downloaded, allow hackers to gain access to victims’ phones — stealing WhatsApp chats, banking details, OTPs, and personal data. In many cases, the hacked accounts are used to spread the same scam to the victim’s contacts.

The District Police advised:

“Do not download or install any unauthorized apps or files received via WhatsApp, email, or SMS — even if they appear to come from friends or family. Enable Two-Step Verification on WhatsApp for added protection.”

If your WhatsApp account has been compromised, immediately contact:
📧 support@whatsapp.com
🌐 https://www.whatsapp.com/contact/?subject=messenger

For any financial loss or cyber fraud, report immediately to:
📞 1930 or visit 🌐 www.cybercrime.gov.in

The District Police urge the public to stay alert and protect themselves from such cyber scams.
